Ja'Shon Burks of Indianapolis to Perform In Recital at Huntington University

The Huntington University Music Department will present a combined sophomore/senior recital by tenor Ja'Shon Burks and soprano Joelle Kriebel at 7:30 p.m. April 12. The free recital will be held in the Longaker Recital Hall of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

Kriebel (soprano) is a senior English major and music minor from Brookston, Ind. She sang soprano for her high school choir for three years before coming to Huntington University where she has been a member of the Concert Choir for four semesters. While a junior in high school, she played the part of Liesl in the school's production of "The Sound of Music." She continued her participation in theater as a featured performer in HU's 2011 Christmas production of "'Tis the Season." In the spring of 2012, she was selected to perform in the Annual Longaker Honors Recital for the HU Music Department. She has been taking voice lessons for four years under the instruction of Prof. Joni Killian.

Burks (tenor), from Indianapolis, is a sophomore choral education and theological studies double major who studies voice with Prof. Joni Killian. He attended Ben Davis High School where he was a member of the top show choir and top concert choir for four years. During his senior year, he was named as outstanding performer in a show four times. He also served as keyboardist/synthesizer player for the women's show choir. While at Ben Davis, he performed in the musical "Aida" as Chief Minister Zoser and "Footloose" as Rev. Shaw. Recently, he participated in "Once Upon a Mattress" as a chorus member with the HU Theatre Department. At the age of 7, he directed his first gospel choir song at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and has continued to direct gospel choirs for 12 years, including the HU gospel choir. In the spring of 2012 and 2013, he was selected to perform in the Annual Longaker Honors Recital for the HU Music Department.
